Chapter Twenty

Hayden

Taking Eliza up in Sally had been a last-minute idea. It was probably a crazy one.

“How are your pancakes?”

She covered her mouth and swallowed. “Muriel is amazing. Don’t you dare tell Ava I said that, either. I know pancakes and baked goods are different, but if Ava knew she had a rival for being one of the best cooks in town, I’m afraid of what she’d do.”

I couldn’t help but laugh. “My lips are sealed. As soon as you finish up there, we’ll be on our way. I need to go through a pre-flight safety check, just to make sure Sally is ready for takeoff.”

Eliza’s eyes were still wide. “I’ve never been on a private plane before. Heck, I’ve only been on a commercial plane twice in my life.”

“You’re in for a treat then. There’s nothing better than sitting in that cockpit and flying. Being up in the clouds with the birds is almost magical.”

She smiled. “When you put it that way, you’ve really got me excited. It’s still a little nerve-wracking.”

Our fingers intertwined on top of the table. “I bet you’re going to be a natural co-pilot. I’ll teach you how all the gauges and buttons work. Before we land, you’d probably be able to fly her on your own.”

“Oh, no. No, thank you,” she said, holding up her hands. “I’ll leave the flying to the experts.”

Our server gathered up our plates, and I chugged the rest of my orange juice. “You ready to go?”

“It’s now or never.”

I dropped my shades down over my eyes and pushed the door open, holding it until Eliza was clear. We crossed the pavement, returning to the hangar where Sally was waiting for us to board. I followed Eliza up the steps into the plane. Once she was settled in the co-pilot seat, I got myself comfortable. Headphones on, I went through the entire pre-flight safety check. After being given the all clear, I headed to the runway. Before long, we were airborne.

It was fun watching Eliza, staring out the window, looking down at the ground, over at me with a giant smile, and then she’d repeat the process. A few times, I noticed her fingers tighten on the white leather seat as I made a bank to the left or right. After an hour, she finally relaxed, and her giddy excitement hit me straight in the gut. I wanted to do whatever I could to keep that smile on her face.

“This is absolutely amazing. Thank you so much for bringing me up here. It’s breathtaking.”

“You’re welcome. Maybe one of these days, while it’s still chilly, we can fly down to Miami for a night. There’s this great seafood restaurant that I visit every time I’m there.”

She blinked in surprise. “Miami?”

“Yeah. Have you ever been?”

“Not really. I mean, I’ve driven through it, but that’s the extent. My sorority sister, Kayla, who lives in Hilton Head, and I vacation down in the Keys every few years. Those are the only times I really get to see her.
